How to get found, understood, trusted and recommended when buyers ask AI

AI Search Visibility: A Malaysian B2B Guide

By Roy Siew, Founder of Cicakify. Updated October 2026. Built on LinkedIn's 2026 guide to AI search visibility, adapted for Malaysian and ASEAN mid-market businesses.

Quick Answer: Your buyers now shortlist suppliers inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude before they WhatsApp you. To get cited, make your company easy to find, easy to understand, easy to trust and easy to recommend, then measure it over 30 days or more. Cicakify calls these four pillars the Digital Authority Framework.

Key takeaways

  • SEO ranks pages. AI search recommends brands that several credible sources agree on.
  • Most Malaysian mid-market firms stall at identity or clarity, not content volume.
  • Judge results at day 30 and beyond, on citations, share of voice and sentiment.

The basics: AEO, GEO and why SEO alone falls short

What is AEO?

Quick Answer: Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) means shaping your content so answer engines like Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT can lift a direct, accurate answer and credit it to you. It rewards short structured answers, clear entities and verifiable expertise, not keyword density.

What is GEO?

Quick Answer: Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the wider job of making your brand appear, and be described accurately, inside AI-generated responses. It covers content, third-party proof, people and measurement. AEO is one tactic inside it.

Why does traditional SEO fall short?

Quick Answer: SEO assumes one ranked list, a click, and a page that wins on keywords and backlinks. AI search blends many sources into one answer, often with no click, and favours brands several credible sources agree on. Optimise only for rank and you stay out of the answer.

Pillar 1: Be Discoverable

Quick Answer: AI cannot recommend a company it cannot identify. Use one name and one description everywhere, link your website and LinkedIn Company Page both ways, keep key pages as plain text, and put named experts in front of the brand. Meltwater's 2026 analysis found individuals earned 75% of LinkedIn citations, Company Pages 25%.

  1. List every place your company appears: website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Facebook, directories.
  2. Pick one legal name, one trading name and one 25-word description. Update every listing to match.
  3. Turn key PDFs (pricing, services, FAQ) into plain-text web pages.
  4. Complete the founder's and two experts' public LinkedIn profiles, then ask each AI tool to open your top three URLs.

Hard truth: A Facebook page, a templated website and a Sdn Bhd name that appears four different ways is not a brand. It is four small companies, and AI will cite none of them.

Local Reality Check: Many Malaysian firms carry a legal name, a trading name and sometimes a Chinese or BM name. Choose a primary name and list the others once, as "also known as". Most deals close in private WhatsApp chats AI cannot read, so your public presence has to carry the weight.

Pillar 2: Be Understood

Quick Answer: AI answers in your buyer's words, so open every key page and section with a 30 to 80 word direct answer under a question heading. Pick three or four themes, write 7 to 10 buyer prompts for each, and use lists, named tools and real numbers. In Meltwater's study of the top 24 cited LinkedIn articles, every one used lists.

  1. Write the buyer question your service page answers as its heading.
  2. Add a 30 to 80 word answer that names your company and includes one number.
  3. Add a list or table below it: steps, criteria, or price ranges in RM.
  4. Date the page ("Updated October 2026") and link pages on the same theme together.

Hard truth: "End-to-end digital transformation partner" will never be cited. If your homepage could belong to any of your ten competitors, AI cannot tell you apart, and neither can your buyer.

Local Reality Check: Buyers mix English, Bahasa Malaysia and sometimes Mandarin, and add terms like SSM, SST, MyInvois or HRD Corp. Test each prompt in each language. Keep Manglish out of authority pages, expand local acronyms once, and show prices in RM.

Pillar 3: Be Trusted

Quick Answer: AI wants independent proof before it recommends anyone. Build it with named customer case studies, press and trade-media coverage, and two or three colleagues posting on the same theme. Customer advocacy is four times more influential than product claims, according to Bain & Company (2025), as cited in LinkedIn's guide.

  1. Ask three strong customers for permission to be named, at project kick-off.
  2. Write one case study each: problem, action, result with a number, customer quote.
  3. Pitch one contributed article or commentary quote to a business or trade outlet.
  4. Share every external placement on LinkedIn under the author's own name.

Hard truth: A case study without a customer name is a rumour. If every good word about you was written by you, you are the only witness.

Local Reality Check: Clutch and G2 are thin for most Malaysian B2B suppliers. Earned coverage in outlets like The Edge Malaysia, The Star and Bernama, plus your industry association, usually carries more weight than paid advertorials.

Quick Answer: Track citations, share of voice and sentiment monthly, and give new content at least 30 days. Profound data cited in LinkedIn's guide shows a median of 6.81 days to first citation, but 10% of pages took over 37 days. A first citation is not stable visibility.

  1. Write 10 buyer prompts for one theme and run them on all five AI platforms.
  2. Log whether you are cited, your position, how you are described and which competitors appear.
  3. Calculate citation rate and share of voice, then repeat monthly against your baseline.
  4. Add "How did you hear about us?" with an "AI tool" option to every form and sales call.

Local Reality Check: Leads arrive by WhatsApp, phone and referral, so analytics label them "direct". Ask every new enquiry how they found you, and log the language and location you used for each prompt.
